March 20, 2010 Herbert, a high-school drop-out, believes that there is a God and prays regularly. Herbert has never accepted Jesus as his personal Savior, but he wants to know more about Him. Recently, Herbert attended a Bible Study at church and was given a Sunday School quarterly and a Bible. He was embarrassed when he was asked to read aloud because it was too difficult for him. He is functionally illiterate which means, like 56% of the adult population of Bartow county, he reads on only a third grade level. Many of those who are functionally illiterate are very intelligent, but must rely on oral methodologies to learn. 14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” 16 But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?” 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. Romans 10:14–17 Pray that we will become more sensitive to oral learners and will learn how to share the of the Bible effectively to them. Pray that God will give oral learners the ears to hear. If you know someone who is unable to read take the time to begin to tell them the story of Jesus yourself.
