40 Days of Preparation Day 24

Today, Monday April 4, 2011, is the twenty-fourth day of preparing our hearts, souls and minds for the most high of all Christian holy days, Easter Sunday. Today I need to “put off” indifference and “put on”fervency. How often do you see a need which should be met and which you could meet and think someone should do something?  How often do you hear someone say something about which you disagree and think someone should say something? Do you help? Do you say anything? If you answered no, to either question then like me you need to “put off” indifference and “put on” fervency.

The following story underscores why each of our responses when we see human need or hear error are so important.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done

Jesus tells us a story that illustrates where our responsibility to others begins and ends.

29 . . . [An expert in the Law], desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.” Luke 10:25–37 (ESV)

In this story Jesus teaches us that the love we have for God must be reflected in the way we value and assist all those whom He places along our life’s path each and every day. This service may take the form of mending and caring for wounds, or it might be that we need to correct someone who mistreats another in our presence. Sometimes we may need to stand up for the truth of the gospel in the presence of others. Whatever the circumstances are in which we find ourselves we need to “put off” indifference and “put on” fervency.

In the Bible the word “fervent” means, always ready to speak or act. Of the 12 disciples Peter was by far the most fervent. He was constantly speaking up and taking the initiative. In the book of 1 Peter he directs Christian to “fervently love” each other.

22 Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart, 1 Peter 1:22 (NASB)

The idea is that Christian love is to be active. If we are to go out of our way to serve strangers on the pathways of life how much more should we be willing to be inconvenienced for brothers and sisters in Christ. Read carefully the following passage.

7 The end of all things is at hand; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.8 Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.9 Be hospitable to one another without complaint.10 As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 1 Peter 4:7–10 (NASB)

As we understand that we are either living in the end times or in the end of our time, we are to be fervently loving one another.  This fervent love will be hospitable without complaint and will utilize our spiritual gifts to serve one another as good stewards of God’s grace.

As we prepare our hearts, souls and minds for the most high of all Christian holy days, lets “put off” indifference and “put on” fervency whatever the circumstances whether we see strangers, friends, family or brothers and sisters in Christ in need of our assistance, advice, or admonition.

Society and the church have agreed that the giving of gifts is the socially acceptable way to celebrate the birth of Christ. But what gifts, and to whom should they be given, and is this what Jesus taught us? Could our current practice have more to do with our acceptance of hidden worldviews than with the clear and convincing teaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ? I believe so! Therefore, over the next four weeks we will endeavor to discover what gifts those who claim His name should give Jesus every day and not just at Christmas.

Discovering Your Uniquely God Given SHAPE

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

I encourage you to begin to serve God through at least one or two ministry areas of First Baptist Church of Emerson. For obedient Christians, refusal to serve is not an option. You need to be serving. You were created by God for service. Continually taking without giving back will make you spiritually sick. You also need to serve because your service is needed. We need committed and trained servants. Remember, bench warming is not a spiritual gift.  So, I ask you to join the rest of us by getting on the field and joining in the battle. If you have a heart to serve I will find you a place where you may serve. Willingness truly is the key to God’s service. Your willingness to serve will release many blessings in your life.

Pray Now Bartow Day 22

Todd recently turned 18. Todd stopped going to church at the age of 12 when his parents quit making him attend. His senior year in high school has been very difficult. He has struggled to make good grades. Now Todd’s parents are going through a nasty divorce. And just this week, his girlfriend Libby, told him that she was breaking up with him. His whole life is crumbling around him and he feels that no one cares. Todd wonders if life is worth living and has considered suicide. Teen suicide is the third leading cause of death of adolescents and teenagers according to the National Institute for Mental Health.

21 Praise be to the Lord, for he showed his wonderful love to me when I was in a besieged city. 22 In my alarm I said, “I am cut off from your sight!” Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help. 23 Love the Lord, all his saints! The Lord preserves the faithful, but the proud he pays back in full. 24 Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord. Psalm 31:21–24

Ask God to show His wonderful love to Todd and all the teenagers in Bartow county who are contemplating suicide.  Pray for Todd’s parents and all those like them who are struggling with divorce and all of its many consequences. Pray that God’s Holy Spirit will show God’s mercy to Todd and his parents as well as all those in our county and world whom they represent.  Pray for the other 6,500 teens ages 15-19 who call Bartow county home. During your prayer time, ask God to awaken churches and the adults in them to become aware of and interested in the needs and cries for help which Todd and other youth are making each and everyday.

If you know a teenager whose parents are divorcing don’t just ask them how they are doing, take them for a hike, watch them play in their sport or school play and then take them to eat afterward.  Let them know that you care for them and that while they may not realize it you are there for them.  Show them Christ’s love don’t just tell them about it.  You will be surprised how quickly your concern and care will bring positive results to their life.

Pray Now Bartow Day 15

On any given night in Georgia, there are over 23,000 children and adults who are homeless. Almost half of the homeless are under-employed like Homer who has a high school education and was once employed in a nearby factory. His company terminated his employment when he was diagnosed with high blood pressure. Then he lost his apartment when he could not pay the rent. Now he sleeps in the woods. Homer has lost all hope.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew 25:34–40

It continues to amaze me at how many in American have more sympathy for their own pets, but refuse to take in individuals like Homer, or to become a foster parent.

Pray for the homeless of Bartow. Ask God to show you how to help them to have a home and hope. Check with the homeless shelter on ways to help. http://www.goodneighborshelter.org/history.html

Before they can hear about our Savior they need us to show them His compassion.
